I am really impressed with Storey Publishing. I sent an email yesterday about the error in the Wave Jumper pattern. Today, I got email back from the editor of One-Skein Wonders series, Judith Durant. She thanked me for alerting them to the issue.
She sent me the corrections for the pattern in the middle size! Within a day! I am mighty impressed.
I wanted a baby project to work on last night. After the Wave Jumper, I decided I needed a super simple project. I cast on the Baby Love Diagonal Baby Blanket by Lion Brand Yarn.
http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/60241.html
The beauty besides the simplicity is that since it is a diagonal, half the blanket is increases, the second half decreases. I have two skeins of Caron Simply Soft Eco yarn. So when skein #1 is about to run out, I can start the decreases with #2. So that way the blanket will work out regardless of how big it is.
Since I have less yarn than the pattern calls for, I figure my blanket will be much smaller. But I think it should still be a nice size.

Some Projects Are Just Challenging...
I am happy to report I finished the Gothic Temptress socks. I also cast on and completed a February Baby Bonnet to match the sweater. So it was definitely a good knitting weekend. I will try to post pictures soon.
I decided I wanted another baby project on the needles. I really thought that the Wave Jumper from the 101 Designer One-Skein Wonders would be an ideal project.
So I cast it on yesterday. I decided to go with the 3-6 month size. Figured that would be a good size. Counted stitches. All good. Went on my merry way. Knit the first two rows. Third row was were the pattern repeat really started. Got the last pattern repeat. Ummm. I was either short several stitches or over a lot.
Checked Ravelry. Only one person had done the middle size as best as I can tell. She said the number of stitches were wrong but didn't say by how much. I did the math. It was definitely incorrect.
So I cast on the correct # of stitches for the repeats. Knitting along. But something was wrong.
I managed to twist it somehow when I connect it for knitting in the round. *sigh*
I frogged it again.
I think it might just be a project for a later date and perhaps another yarn. I figured the ONline Supersocke 100 would be fun as it is a self striping yarn. And it would show off the wave pattern. But I don't know if it is the best choice. The yarn is kinda splitty. Also, there is a lot of pattern in the yarn already. The plies aren't the same color in most areas. So it is a pretty busy yarn. It might be too busy for the dress. I am not sure yet. I might try again at a later date. But I think something else should go on my needles right now.
I still have a Wensleydale Lace socks on my needles. I should try to finish by the end of the month for the KAL. Don't know if that will happen of course. I have maybe 1/2"-1" done of them. So probably not in only 20 days as I am not a fast knitter. But who knows. I still want to complete them as they should be pretty socks. (And the silk and nylon in them might make them nice summer socks.)
And then there is the alpaca cardigan that is always in the works. *laugh* I should try to finish it for next fall. But I haven't really been inspired by it. So it isn't moving very fast. It is silly as I have done the sleeves & about 1/4th-1/3rd of the body. So I should just get moving on it!
The brain has been percolating. And pattern searching of course. *grin* I am thinking a simple baby blanket would be good. I picked up some purple Caron Simply Soft Eco yarn. It is very soft and machine wash. I had figured it would make a nice blankie.
There is a super simple baby blanket:

The beauty of the pattern is that it is knit on a diagonal. So I can just keep increasing until I am almost out of yarn & then decrease with the second skein. It should work well.
Still thinking I might want another baby project on the needles. Maybe booties to match the February sweater & bonnet?

First Baby Sweater for Kiddle & WIPs
First Baby Sweater for Kiddle
Cast On:
April 21, 2009
Completed:
May 2, 2009
Pattern:
February Baby Sweater on Two Needles by Elizabeth Zimmermann
from Knitter's Almanac
Made for:
My Baby Girl Kiddle Due in Sept. - Size 0-6 months
Needles:
US 4 / 3.5 mm Knitpicks Options
Yarn:
Knit Picks Shine Sport in Cherry Colorway
2.5 skeins = 275.0 yards (251.5m)
Purchased at
Knit Picks http://www.knitpicks.com
First project I am knit for my baby girl kiddle due in Sept.. I am so excited to be knitting baby clothes.
I got the Shine Sport as it is machine wash. I figured it made sense to use it on the infant stuff as it will probably still be pretty warm in Sept.. Then again, you never know!
EZ doesn’t mention adding buttonholes until the pattern started. So I didn’t put any in for the garter rows. I just decided to put an icord tie at the neck instead. I like the way it looks.
I love that is the first baby sweater for my little girl to come!
I do seem to struggle with EZ's patterns though. The way she writes things doesn't make sense to me sometimes. For instance, for the sleeves, she says knit 4" with a 1" garter stitch border. However, it isn't clear if that means it is 4" or 5" total. I went with 5" based on another baby sweater I knit. I figure if they are long they can be cuffed.
She also just assumes you know you should be putting in buttonholes all along the way. I recall from the Tomten that I should read the entire pattern before I start. But I can't seem to translate in my head what it means. I can read it, but it doesn't make sense to me. So I tend to work along the pattern and the find that there was something she wanted me to do! *chuckle*
Either way, it is a pretty sweater. And it will look great on the little one.
I am going to do the matching bonnet which being EZ it is shown but no clear instructions given. Luckily, Jamie/Silvercat pointed out that someone on Ravelry has probably already figured out how to do it. And she was right. There were a few different ones, but I liked this one the most. http://www.ravelry.com/projects/imajypsee/february-baby-bonnet (sorry Ravelry only link)
Works in Progress
I am not sure what should go on my needles next other than the baby bonnet. I do want to cast on an EZ baby surprise jacket. But I am not sure what yarn I want to use for it. Also, two EZ patterns back to back might drive me bonkers!
I have two pairs of socks on the needles currently. That is a rarity. I usually just stick to one pair at a time.
One are the Gothic Temptress socks. I love them, but they are knee socks and took forever to knit. I only have to bind off the edge, then fold over and attach for a picot edge. I will use EZ's sewn bind off so they are nice and stretchy. Though I confess I am worried about sewing the top over to create the picot edging. If it is too tight, they won't stretch enough. I am going to have to just be careful and perhaps leave more yarn than I would think was wise.
I also cast on a sock pattern that my mother-in-law got me while she was in England. I have been wanting to cast these on for a while, but hadn't yet. The Sock Knitters Anonymous KAL for April was underappreciated patterns (or a couple other options). The Gothic Temptress socks are for the April KAL as there were less than 15 in Ravelry. The Wensleydale Lace sock pattern wasn't even in Ravelry. So it definitely fit into that category. So I cast them on April 30th. I have til the end of this month to finish them for them to be included. Though I am aware I might not make it. Especially not with the baby knitting I want to do.
But either way, I want to make them. The yarn is this lovely Schaefer Heather that is superwash, silk & nylon. It has such a beautiful shimmer. And with the laciness of them, they should make nice summer socks.
The yarn I was talking about:
The SKA KAL for May was cables or a designer who only has one free pattern. I confess that I don't really see cables as spring socks. And I don't buy really buy individual patterns. So I figured it made sense to have a pair of socks I wanted to do. If they get done in time, great! If not, I will still have a lovely pair of socks.
I have rambled enough for today!

Wow. I Am Pooped!
My favorite local yarn store, The Point, is going out of business! It was really sudden. They lost their lease. Unfortunetly, they won't be reopening. I am really sad as the staff was super friendly and helpful. I am really depressed to see them go as they are 2 blocks from my office.
I had said I wouldn't spend any yarn money because I am going to Maryland Sheep & Wool on Saturday. But they are selling off everything for 30% off. So I figured it was worth stopping by.
The store opened at 11. I got there are 11:15. It was mobbed! It isn't a huge store to start with. But I looked around. I ended up getting a book of baby patterns, 'Essential Knits' by Debbie Bliss, some recycled cotton yarn, buttons & some Soak soap (haven't tried it but I figured it was worth it given the discount).
The problem is I am now completely exhausted. I was only in the store 45 minutes and now feel like I need a nap! *sigh* I am stunned. I really didn't think I was that bad. But NYC is very hot. The store has AC, but it still did a number on me. All I want to do is curl up now.
Unfortunately, I missed yoga class because I got back too late. *pout* It would have been good for me. And I can't go Wednesday as I have an eye appointment at 3:00. Ah well.
I think I made a mistake buying 'Essential Knits'. I want 'The Expectant Mother', but they didn't have any copies left. I saw a couple cute things in 'Essential Knits' so I decided to get it. I admit that I am tempted to see if I could return it. I might sell it on the Amazon Marketplace. *shrugs* After getting it back to my desk I realized that the patterns I like are very similar to ones I have found for free. And a lot of them are sweaters that require seaming pieces which I loathe. *shrugs* So I am not sure what I will do with it. Ah well.

Announcement, Pattern Suggestions and FO
It is official. My husband and I are expecting a baby girl.
The due date is Sept. 20th, 2 days before Paul's birthday. (Which of course means some time around then. *grin*)
Though, I keep crying - "no pink"! *laugh* Hey, purple is great! That works. *grin*
(There was testing done so we know it is a girl for certain. It isn't based on an ultrasound. So there shouldn't be any surprises in that department. I am sure there will be plenty of others to make up for it. *grin*)
So I am hoping to get some good baby pattern suggestions from knitting folks I know. Any suggestions?
I have been told a lot not to bother with more than 1-2 pieces in the 0-6 month range. By all accounts a baby will only get to wear them once or twice before they outgrow them.
I am also making sure anything I was is machine wash & dry. I have picked up some Knit Picks Sport Shine in cherry (cotton/modal) and Essential Kettle Dyed in eggplant (superwash wool). I figure Maryland Sheep & Wool will be mostly about baby friendly yarns, though I also know it will be in part about fiber as that is harder to get beside mail order.
Here is the finished object I mentioned. And yes, I will be redoing the pattern for my new addition.
Sweater for New Addition to George Jr.'s Family

Cast On:

Completed:

Pattern:
Soft N Seamless Baby Sweater by Lynda Ward
http://www.knitlist.com/96gift/giftsoft.htm
Made for:
New Addition to George Jr.'s Family
Size:
0-3 months
Needles:
US 8 / 5.0 mm Knitpicks Options
Yarn:
Bernat Silky Soft in 135 - Navy
~0.7 skeins = 192.5 yards (176.0m)
Purchased at Smiley's Yarns Sale (2007?)
I wanted a quickie sweater that would be easy to knit during my work conference. I also hate seaming. This fit the bill perfectly.
I have to admit, I didn’t care for the increase for the raglan. It is a m1, yo, m1. I tried it, but the hole just doesn’t seem right to me for a raglan seam.
Also, I clearly didn’t get what the author was saying about the increase placement. I had finished the increases. However, I had to frog the entire thing after discovering that because I had increased in the wrong place, the raglan line was not diagonals on two of the four increases.
I took the pattern as a template and used a typical raglan increase. I placed a marker before & after the center stitch of the raglan so there was no confusion on my part. I lifted the bar on the left before the marker and knit into it, k1, then lifted the bar after the marker and knit into it. So I got an even increase that was closed.
It was very simple and quick. I was glad I could give it to them when I saw them.

Finished Objects & WIPs
I just realized that with work being so busy I hadn't gotten around to posting pics of some finished objects!
Work has been kinda crazed. I had a work conference in March/April so it means I was away for a week. So that always throws things off. On top of that, the time leading up to conference and the time after are busy. So this got lost in the shuffle. I am hoping that most of the post conference work is wrapped up so I can post more regularly again.
I did take pics of a baby sweater I made for my nephew and his wife (It isn't as weird as it sounds. He is mid 30s.) But I didn't seem to email them to myself. So I don't have them to post yet. Maybe Monday.
Though I swear I have been knitting! Here are some pics to prove it.
Woven Ridge Socks for DH
Pattern:
Woven Ridge Socks by Cat Bordhi
from New Pathways for Sock Knitters: Book One
http://www.amazon.com/New-Pathways-Sock-Knitters-Book/dp/0970886969
Made for:
My hubby Paul - 9 1/2" smallest point, 10" long
Needles:
US 1 / 2.25 mm Knitpicks Options & Harmony - 2 socks on 2 circs
Yarn:
Spirit Trail Fiberworks "Helen" ~ 100% Superwash Merino Yarn
~ 400 yards
Colorway - Harbor Fog
Purchased from The Loopy Ewe http://www.theloopyewe.com/
I decided I wanted to do a Cat Bordhi pattern for the March Sock Knitters Anonymous KAL. I hadn’t done one of her patterns since my Coriolis socks a year ago.
I confess that I forgot just how much math was involved. The spreadsheet I have definitely helps. But I nearly made a huge error when I miscounted the number of stitches & thought something was very wrong. Luckily, I realized my miscalculation before I did anything bad.
But on the flip side, because so much of the pattern is stockinette, it goes really fast.
I added some ribbing to the back side of the sock so it will have a better fit. I find that all stockinette legs have a tendency to slide down too easily.
The weird thing is that I goofed on the Woven Ridge pattern. I don’t know why. But after I finished the heels, I thought I remembered the pattern as it is really simple. But I goofed. I slipped the stitches without bringing the yarn forward. *sigh* It was about 2" into it before I realized the mistake. I asked my husband if he wanted me to rip back. He said it was okay. So I just switched back to the correct stitch. So there is the correct stitch on the foot, then the wrong one, then the correct one again. It almost looks like it could have been intentional.
My hubby is thrilled I made him socks. *grin* This is his second pair. They are definitely his colors. He really loves them.
Works in Progress
I have two real works in progress. I say real because I still have a purse that has been sitting around since before Xmas that needs a button & maybe some lining. It is for a friend I haven't seen since October. I hope to see her. And when I do I will finish it.
One is the long time alpaca sweater. It is from the yarn I bought at Rhinebeck in 2007. I finally cast it on in Sept. 2008 so I could justify buying more yarn at Rhinebeck. *laugh* The sleeves are done as well as about 6-8" of the body. Though I gained weight since I started it. So I am still debating what I will do with it. Given I am doing it in pieces, I can create panels at the sides to add in if I need it. I still pick it up now and again.
Also, I have a pair of Gothic Temptress socks on my needles. The Sock Knitters Anonymous KAL for April is underappreciated patterns or knee highs. This actually fits into both categories.
The pattern is free on Ravelry:
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/gothic-temptress
It doesn't seem to be available elsewhere.
I have the feet and about 3-4" of the leg done so far. Again, lots of stockinette so they are going pretty quickly. I definitely like them. Simple but pretty.
Here is a pic of the one's made for the pattern:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/8089512@N02/2960378155/in/photostream/
I am spinning too. I try to do a little each weekday morning before work. I find it calms me and sorta helps me focus for the day.
I was working on the luscious merino/cashmere/silk blend that winderwoodfarm.etsy.com made especially for me. It is yummy.
http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.php?transaction_id=13566446
But I needed a break. It spins super thin and thus takes a long time to spin. I have about 3-4 of 10 oz. spun into a single.
I got this beautiful batt called That Old Black Magic from butterflygirldesigns.etsy.com. So I decided it needed to go on the wheel. It is superwash merino/bamboo blend. So it has a lovely sheen. It is only 3.7 oz. So it shouldn't take as long to spin. But I have found I need to pause when I am spinning. There are nubs that didn't seem to get blended. I probably should have just done more of an art yarn with it. But it is sooo lovely. Black & purple. My kind of colors. I do like spinning it though. It just takes a bit longer than I had anticipated.
http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.php?transaction_id=14510202
She seems to sell these batts now and again. She also has occasionally had similar colors in sock yarn which I need too.
I am still in love with my Babe wheel. It definitely is a great little work horse. I picked up 4 more bobbins for it so I can switch around things if I want to put something else on my wheel.
I have to confess however that I do want to try out some wheels when I go to Maryland Sheep & Wool. I wanted to try wheels at Rhinebeck. But I didn't actually try any. So heaven knows I might not at MD either. But we shall see. *evil grin*
So I am ending this now so that I will actually post it today! *grin*
Hopefully, it won't be so long before the next post.

Chevron Lace Scarf in Tempted Handspun

Pattern:
Spot-Dyed Chevron Lace Scarf Pattern by JP
http://the-doily-underground.blogspot.com/2007/10/spot-dyed-chevron-lace-scarf-with.html
Needles:
US 9 / 5.5 mm Knitpicks Options
Yarn:
Handspun by Me
145.0 yards
Fiber is Tempted Hand Painted 80% superwash merino/20% Cashmere Fiber in Roxanne - Red & Black
Purchased at The Loopy Ewe in St. Louis, Missouri
I am pretty happy with this scarf. I wore it today. *grin* Nice spring/fall weight. Not too heavy, but cozy.
I think it came out well. I am happy with my spinning. It is getting more consistent. I am also pretty thrilled that I was able to do a Navajo ply to keep the colors separate, but didn't overtwist it. So it has a nice feel to it. Soft and squishy. Definitely nice!
I picked the pattern because I wanted a pattern that should be easy yet feature the yarn really well. I found this pattern. It is an ideal fit.
The pattern allows for great customization. Yet it is only 2 row repeat (one of which is purl), so it is super simple & quick. It definitely shows off the striping of colors wonderfully.
It was a quick knit. It only took as long as it did because there were a lot of nights I didn't touch it at all while working on socks. It could have been done in a weekend easily.
Definitely happy with this piece.

Woven Ridge Socks
I cast on a pair of Woven Ridge Socks from New Pathways for Sock Knitters: Book One by Cat Bordhi. I always forget just how different Cat's patterns are until I am in the middle of one of them. They are ingenious and I love them. But since this is only my second pair, there are times when I have to really sit down and read the pattern. And reread. *grin*
I cast the socks on Friday night. And I was wizzing through them. Because the foot is stockinette, it is pretty quick. At the 2" mark, I measured the rows per inch. I did a couple times on Friday, then again on Saturday. I really thought it was 10.5 rows per inch.
I really thought I was done all the increases. I am looking at the number of stitches and kinda scratching my head. I should have 102 stitches. There were 51 on the instep needle. I am good to go. But wait. Why is it only 5 1/2" when DH's foot is 10"? *blink*
I am thinking that can't be right. I remeasured the rows per inch. Now I am getting 11. Hmmm. So I should have made the toe longer before starting the increases. But the difference is only .35". So I am figuring I can either knit that now or say the sock will be a bit more snug on the feet. It will be fine. But it really seems way too short to start the heel.
I am looking at it. Pondering. I decide I will move the wing stitches now in prep for the heel. Thank goodness I did. The instep needle does indeed have 51 stitches, half the stitches that I need for the foot. But there were no increases on the sole needle! That only has the 35 stitches. So instead of the 102 stitches I should have total, I only have 86 stitches! That is 16 stitches less than I should have! Thank goodness I checked.
Since the increases are only every 3 rows, that is still another 24 rows, so another 2"+ worth of sock! That makes a lot more sense. *grin*
So much fun with math! *laugh*
I have a spreadsheet I use to figure out the numbers. I am thinking I will the number on the top needle for next time! So in case it is a while before I do a pair again, I will actually remember this time. *grin*
The pattern is nice. There is just a simple 7 stitch pattern at the top of the foot. It is very easy but enough to keep it quick yet interesting. I definitely like the way it looks. Though the yarn might not feature it as well as a higher contrast yarn would.
I am planning on adding some ribbing up the back of the leg. I figure this way it will stay up better and fit Paul's calves better. I admit that I dislike that so many of Cat's patterns seem to have stockinette legs. I find that means they don't stay up as well. The Coriolis socks I have incorporate increases as you go up the leg which helps. But mine have a tendency to slide down as the day goes onward. So I figure that the ribbing will help these sock stay up on Paul. The question now is more about how wide a piece to do. Given there is a 7 stitch pattern on the front, the easiest mirror might be a 7 stitch rib on the back. But I am not sure that is enough. Have to look at what I want to do with the cuff at the top. I still have to finish the heels so I have time to decide.

Brigit Socks in Jitterbug & WIP
I finished up my Brigit Socks in Jitterbug last night.
Brigit Socks in Jitterbug
Cast On:
February 12, 2009
Finished:
March 3, 2009
Pattern:
Brigit by Monkey Toes (Ravelry only pattern)
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/brigit
Made for:
Me - 9" circumference, 9 1/4" long
Needles:
US 0 / 2.0 mm & US 1 / 2.25 mm Knitpick Options & Harmony
2 socks on 2 circs
Yarn:
Colinette Jitterbug in Vatican Pie - 160
1 skeins = 320.0 yards (292.6m)
Purchased at:
Tucson Yarn Company in Tucson, Arizona
I knit these toe up as I wasn't sure how much length I would get out of the Jitterbug. I have heard it is kinda short on yardage. So I figure it is safer to do it this way.
I like the pattern. It worked out pretty well doing it toe up. I used the heel from the Wendy Johnson Toe-Up Feather and Fan socks. I found I like her double wrap. It closes up the holes that I can sometimes get with toe-up socks. So that is good.
I am pretty happy with these. Nice solid socks. Not earth shattering, but they will be good to wear.

Yarn Club & WIPs
I got into the Vamp Yarn Club that Fresh from the Cauldron is running. I am looking forward to it.
The interesting thing is that they already show the various colorways. I get to pick the ones I want. So I won't end up with colorways that just aren't my thing. So I am pretty happy. *smile* I am doing the bimonthly one, so I will get 3 shipments.
I know two of the colorways I want are Volturi & Fangstasia. I know, shocking. *laugh* Not at all my colors. *smirk*
I am waiting to see what the dyer comes up with for the three remaining Anne Rice vamp colorways. I suspect she is going to go with eye & hair color like she did with Claudia. But I am not sure. I also think the Michael Corvin colorway is something that Paul would like. So that might be my third selection.
I really wish I could do the RainyDaysWoolyDogs's GothSocks Sock Club. I might even do both but the RDWD one is pay upfront. And I can't really afford that right now. If it were a month by month, I would do it. I really need to order some of their yarn sometime though. I keep meaning to and by the time I get to it, the colorway I want is gone. They have a Romantic Goth colorway that I love. *smile* I would love to see them do that in roving! I think that would be beautiful.
On the knitting front, my Brigit socks are 99% done. Seriously. I have bound off half of each sock! *laugh* I almost finished them last night, but I knew it would take a while longer. And the last thing you want to do is rush a sewn bind off. I really want socks that will actually fit when I am done. *grin* So I was good and put them down. They should be off my needles tonight for certain.
I wound the Spirit Trail Fiberworks Helen yarn in Harbor Fog this morning. I suspect it will be a good yarn. I am worried it might be a bit splitty, but it is hard to tell yet. It is going to be socks for my hubby Paul. The designer for the March KAL for Sock Knitters Anonymous is Cat Bordhi. I have been wanting to try another of her sock patterns from New Pathways for Sock Knitters. I did the Coriolis socks from that and they were interesting. I figure the beauty of the book is that I can always figure out the exact right size for the socks which is nice.
I also cast on a Chevron Lace Scarf from this pattern. I am using the Tempted Hand Painted 80% superwash merino/20% Cashmere Fiber I spun for it. I think it will look nice with the color changes. It is a simple 2 row repeat. So that makes it pretty quick. I should have this done for spring, should it decide to come anytime soon!
