Tour de Fleece 2020 Day 1 & 2

I was thrilled to see that the Tour de Fleece is going to run on the normal schedule. The Tour de France has been moved to late August to mid Sept.  But thankfully, the TdF is sticking with the summer schedule.  Happy as that means I can spin more since I am not currently commuting.

My company announce over a month ago that the NYC office are close until Labor Day.  And they will assess the situation at that time.  So not having a 2+ hour commute Tuesday-Thursday means more time at home & possibly even spinning during lunch!  Woohoo!

I joined most of the same teams as the previous years.  Spinning Into the Whirled fibers.  So back on their team.  Also Akerworks, Schacht & Warped Weavers.

I am on Team Tardis this year.  Haven't been in eons!  One of the ItW colorways is The Empty Child.  Love it!  And it inspired me to watch some Doctor Who for this round.  I like having some viewing material.  And been a long while since I watched the older episodes of Doctor Who.  So figure it would be good to go back to it.

Didn't realize it had moved to HBOMax.  But we still have HBO.  So it comes with our subscription.  I was just talking about letting it go...but guess we will keep it a while longer.  *laugh*

I am starting the TdF with a lovely colorway that kinda screamed Pride to me!  Though of course as I am spinning it, I realize it is missing the blues & reds of the Pride flag.  But I still think it works. *laugh*  The fiber is really bright and happy!

Tour de Fleece Days 7-16 - Spinning Singles of Into the Whirled Polwarth/Tussah Silk in Captain Tightpants Colorway

Here is the link on Ravelry to the spinning:
https://ravel.me/akasha/ct

Life has been busy.  So I haven't really had a chance to catch up on blogging or even posting to Ravelry about the Tour de Fleece!

Since Into the Whirled was having a team again I wanted to participate.  Love their fibers.  Much to my shock, I am was down to only FOUR of their fibers left! *gasp*.

I almost spun the Rhinebeck colorway. But just couldn't stop myself with Captain Tightpants! Love the colors.  I thought about saving it for a year when I participated in the Firefly TdF group.  But didn't want to wait.

I decided to split it down the middle & spin the singles on two bobbins.  Figure I can see what a two ply looks like as well as Navajo/chain plying.  The colors are so bright that I want to keep them clean & have them pop.  I really want the yardage of the 2-ply.  But may decide that Navajo/chain plying is a better way to go to keep the colors strong & saturated.

Going to see what happens when I ply & decide then.

Kinda funny that I am spinning Polwarth/Silk blends back-to-back.  Love anything & everything with silk.  And the Polwarth in particular spins wonderfully with it.

Very happy with both the Into the Whirled & The First Draft fibers.  And given their vintage in my stash, it is amazing they spin so beautifully! I think I predrafted The First Draft last year when I started it.  But can't recall.  And with the ItW, didn't predraftt at all.

Xanadu & Hair.  Xanadu is one of those musicals I watch regularly.  Still love it.  Gene Kelly is always awesome.  And I love Olivia Newton-John.  Definitely of its time.  But in a fun, campy way.  Hair is also very much of its time.  But very different in feel.  Didn't actually finish watching it as it is long

Tour de Fleece Wrapup

I didn't post for the last days of the TdF.  Whoops.

I did post to the Into the Whirled thread for finished items.  Didn't win.  *sniffle*  Though there were 51 entries.  So the odds weren't strong.

I posted to the Akerworks one.  That closes today.  But there are A LOT of members in that group.  I just posted & am 104!  And even with 15 prizes...  You never know but not betting on it.

I am so sad!  I missed the prize deadline for the Schacht group.  *sigh*  I didn't read closely.  They opened a prize thread at the end of the tour.  Ah well.

Mind you, I am not in it for the prizes.  But it gives me something to work towards.

Here's all my progress together.

Tour de Fleece 2018 Finished Goods

I am pretty happy with what I did.

8 oz of Into The Whirled Polwarth Silk Blended Top in 221B Colorway
~434 yds of 2 ply

4 oz Into The Whirled Polwarth Falkland Wool Carded Batt in Cattywumpus Colorway
~180 yds of 2 ply

2 oz of The First Draft Polwarth Silk in the Thomas Waith Is in Love Colorway
still on the bobbin as I didn't finish the other 2 oz. yet

Wish I had gotten more yardage out of the 221B.  I was spinning singles to 28 WPI.  So I really thought I would get a fingering weight. But it plumped up a lot.

It is funny.  EVERYTHING I spun had Polwarth!  I think it has more crimp than I first thought.  So I think that was part of the poof of the 221B even with the silk.

I knew the batt would poof a lot as I tried to keep it woolen spun.  I really didn't figure I would get a lot of yardage with a batt woolen spun.  So I was thrilled with the 180 yards.  I anticipate making a long cowl out of it similar to the one I made from a Loop Bullseye Bump.

It was the Icordion Cowl.

But looking at my projects, I think I was actually thinking of the Honey Cowl which I knit out of another ITW batt!

The First Draft Polwarth/Silk in the Thomas Waith Is in Love colorway seems to be spinning up super fine.  But I am not taking any bets on yardage after 221B!  It is the same fiber makeup.  And I really thought the 221B was going to get me 600-700 yards.... Ah well.

Happy with my spinning for the TdF.  As always, it is good to have something driving me to spin every day.

I did miss on day.  My bus took 3 hours to get home.  And I just couldn't deal with anything at all.  But other than that, I spun daily.  So I am a happy camper.

I will try to post pics I took of the The First Draft Polwarth/Silk that I took during the TdF.  But I want to get this posted.  Then hopefully out for lunch & ice cream!

TdF Days 12-15

I confess, I didn't spin a thing on Day 12...  Due to bus issues, it took me over three hours to get home.  And I was sore after being cramped for that long on the bus.  So I did nada.

Days 13-15, I finished plying the Into The Whirled Polwarth Falkland Wool Carded Batt in Cattywumpus colorway.  I really like the way it looks.  Since I was spinning it woolen to keep the air in it, I suspect it will plump even more after its bath.  I need to skein & soak it!

I have to admit, I am kinda disappointed in the yardage after the bath for the ITW Polwarth/Silk Blended Top in 221b colorway.  I really hoped to get at least 600 yards or possibly more out of 8 oz..  No such luck.  I only got about 435 yards!  Out of EIGHT OUNCES!  *sigh*

I really thought I would get more.  Not sure why.  I know it puffed up some.  But I checked while spinning the singles. Most of the time, it was about 28 WPI.  Really figured I would get a fingering weight with a 2 ply.  Alas, not the case.

Tour de Fleece 2018 Day 11 - Into The Whirled Polwarth Falkland Wool Carded Batt in Cattywumpus Colorway Plying Started

I know yesterday was a Challenge Day, but alas, it was a challenge enough to get any spinning done.  So I am happy with that.

I got home late yesterday due to rain.  So much fun...  But I did get some done.  I decided to start plying.  Looking good.

Tour de Fleece 2018 Day 10 - Into The Whirled Polwarth Falkland Wool Carded Batt in Cattywumpus Colorway 2nd Single Started & Completed!

Yesterday was a whole lot more productive than I thought it would be!  I completed the second singles of the Into the Whirled Polwarth Falkland wool carded batt in Cattywumpus colorway.  It went surprisingly quickly.  Think it looks good.  Hoping it plies well with the first singles.  *fingers crossed*

I decide to watch a Babylon 5 episode with lunch.  I went with "Grey 17 Is Missing."  I have been going through the Marcus episodes in chronological order.  Next was actually the two parter War Without End. I didn't have time for two episodes. And I feel like I was getting stalled on those episodes.  I recall they were the Shadow Wars and not my favs.  So I decided to move ahead.

It was a good episode.  It was fun to see Robert Englund not playing Freddie.  *smile*  And Garibaldi had some wonderful bits in the episode.  After Marcus & Ivanovna, he is next in my top B5 characters.

Marcus has to fight to delay a Minbari from the warrior cast who disagrees with Delenn becoming the head of the Rangers since she is the religious cast.  And as always, Marcus wins out though takes a severe beating to make that happen.  A very good episode.

I spun some more in the evening while my hubby & I watched Wynonna Earp.  I am so thrilled that I got the second singles spun in a day.  Hooray for that.

Since it is only 4 oz., I will stick with the smaller bobbins.  After attempting to ply on the bulky flyer, I am thinking more and more that I don't care for it much.

All in all, I am thrilled.

Tour de Fleece Day 10

Today is a challenge day.  But the real challenge will be spinning at all.  I commute 2 hours each way to the city.  And working 8 hours.  So it is a lot of time away from home.  So honestly, my goal is to spin 15 minutes.  That will be a challenge.  Especially because that means starting on some plying or starting on new fiber.  And I have no idea what is going on the wheel next!

I may do a separate post with the pics of the ItW Polwarth/Silk that I plied.   I skeined it yesterday & gave it a bath.  But I may wait until I have finished pics & all the details (like total yardage, WPI, etc.)

Tour de Fleece Days 7 to 9 - Into The Whirled Polwarth Falkland Wool Carded Batt in Cattywumpus Colorway Creating First Single

On happy news, my brandy new Akerworks bobbin arrived on Saturday.  Isn't she lovely?!

Lovely New Akerworks Bobbin

I had company on Saturday & Sunday.  So I didn't get anywhere near the amount of spinning done as last weekend.  But I enjoyed having company.

I split the Into The Whirled Polwarth Falkland Wool Carded Batt in half to make a 2 ply.  I am mostly spinning it woolen as it is a batt.  Trying to keep the loft in it.  Though I don't know how successful I am.  I guess I will see when it plied & gets it bath.

The Hubby Says "A hobby"

So I love my DH.  Though Friday night, I shot daggers from my eyes.  Though not in a serious way.  *laugh*

On a tv show we were watching, they said the person should get a hobby.  He pointed out that the saying is *A* hobby.  I shot my daggers and then laughed.

He says this because I am taking up another hobby.  Fiber related of course.

An awesome lady who I had the pleasure of working with for many years is selling her two weaving looms.  And I am buying the smaller of the two.  It is a Schacht 20" Table Loom.

I confess that if she weren't selling it at such an amazing price, I wouldn't even dream of it.  But it is about the cost of a new rigid heddle loom.  And it is Schacht.  And after having my Ladybug nearly two years, I am in love with the company.  They were awesome about answering questions even *before* I bought the wheel.  And I bought a used wheel at that.  But they answered all sorts of questions.  Awesome.

And I LOVE my Ladybug.  It is an amazing wheel.  I adore spinning on it.  Though I have to confess.  It hasn't been touched since after I finished plying my MASSIVE double Bump Loop madness.  I didn't get it finished for the Tour de Fleece.  But I finished it after getting back from SSK.

Mind you, that was not about the wheel.  That was about me.  I spin tons during the TdF and then STOP for at least 2-4 months afterwards.  So it is my yearly pattern any time I do the Tour de Fleece!  *laugh*

So... I am waiting for my tax refund before I can actually get my new-to-me loom.  Being me, what does that mean?  I start learning all I can.  Researching, reading and with weaving, there are a ton of awesome videos on YouTube that are super helpful.

I started thinking about projects.  I know a simple plain/tabby weave is a great starter project.  But it is me...  So I think about doing that for eons.  In just two colors...

I watched some YouTube videos for weaving.  I am thrilled there are so many good ones available.  It is so helpful.

One guy uses a rigid heddle to weave scarves.  And he can do it relatively fast.  He says about 4 hours for a completed project.  *blink*  He uses some bulker yarns.  They look great.  He uses long color stripe yarns.  And inexpensive ones at that.  He suggested Bernat Mosaic (which is discontinued), something from Red Heart & Lion Brand Landscapes yarn.

LB is having a sale on Scarfie which is as you would expect, a scarf length of yarn!  Mandala also has long color repeats which could be cool.  So I am thinking that an order might not be the worst idea.  *smile*

But I looked at the yarns and went..."Hey...wait a sec.  Those look like the kind of long colors you get with handspun..."  Which of course inspired me...

See the slippery slope?!  *laugh*

So I wanted something fun & funky. Something where I could just play with colors and not stress too much if all was harmonious.  And if it didn't work out, that was okay too.

I remembered I had the bag of Odds & Ends from Into the Whirled.  That could be perfect.  Lots of fun & a bit of a mystery.

I loved spinning the singles.  I just spun it all & figure I will Navajo ply to keep the colors very sharp.  The warp can work to pull it all together.

The fibers were fun to spin.  Since it is an odds & ends bag, I don't know what fibers were in it.  But I would swear that at least a third to half had some silk in them.  And I LOVE silk blends.  Mind you, in the same order from Into the Whirled, I had several braids of fiber with silk...  *laugh*  I just checked.  ALL the spinning fiber had silk in the order.  *chuckle*  So heaven knows, given how awesome the folks at ItW are, they may have pull an Odds & Ends bag with silk for me.  I am always confused, but some spinners don't like silk in spinning.  So they may separate them.  Or maybe I just lucked out!  *laugh*

The bag has a lot of green.  But there are bits & bobs of many colors.  I think it will be really interesting to see how it ends up in weaving.  I also figured it was a good way to use the colors.

This is the first time I am using the Akerworks bobbin I got at SSK.  I know...  Embarrassing that I have had it since July, but it only just got on the wheel.  But I haven't spun singles since the end of the Tour de Fleece.  As expected, I am in LLLOOOOVVVVEEE.  I adore seeing through the end of the bobbin!  I can only imagine what that would look like for a Bullseye Bump!

Into The Whirled Odds & Ends - Side View on the Lovely Akerworks Bobbin

The Odds & Ends say they are between 4-4.3 oz.  And there was still room on bobbin.  I really wonder if I could fit a whole Bump on it.   Not sure...  Of course, may need to try at some point.  *grin*

Here's a pic of the singles finished on the bobbin.

Into The Whirled Odds & Ends - Singles Complete

Of course, it makes me want *MORE* of them.  *sigh*  And I actually *have* a lot of bobbins as I got them with my wheel.  So I really don't *need* more.  But WANT!!

We will see between now & when the tax refund arrives what I decide I need.  *laugh*  I want to pick up some weaving yarns as well.  I don't own much in the way of cotton.  And I think some washable cotton placemats could be awesome place to start with weaving.

The Yarn Barn of Kansas has some weaving kits.  I really think one of their samplers could be great.  Turns out they have one for dish towels which could be great.  Though of course, I love the sampler scarves.  My first knitting project is a scarf I still wear that is a sampler!  So it seems kinda fitting.

Sooo many choices!  The Woolery also has weaving kits.  And then there are tons of patterns & such.  So I could just get the yarn & have at it.

SOOOO EXCITED!!  I really can't wait for the tax return to come.  Hopefully soon.  We e-filed already.  And they are saying it generally is completed within 4 weeks.  *fingers crossed it comes soon*
