The Priciest Shawl Ever

I started the Catkin shawl in December of 2014.  The yarn cost me about $65.  So not a cheap project.  I know, I know...lots of people send way more.  But that makes it my most expensive shawl.

But it is beautiful yarn.  And the pattern is gorgeous.  All is good.  For a while.

I knit on it until late January.  And then fail.  The designer and I were speaking different languages it would seem.

So I put it in a time out.  For MONTHS.

Fast forward to mid-November.  I had some time to sit down and look it over.  Figured out what was wrong.

Things click.  Bam.  It is going great.

I used by ereader for my patterns.  I love e-ink for books.  It isn't as good about pdfs.  But it works.

Then crash.  My Kobo fell from a waist high shelf.  Not high.  Onto a wood floor.  It had happened before & in worse places.

Not a biggie...or so one would think.

It was dead.  *sniffle*

I had a backup (long story).  So okay.  The wifi is glitchy.  Hooray.  I can read.

I decide last Saturday to put my SD card in the old one & use it.  I had been letting DH use it.  So I felt kinda bad taking it back.  But he insisted it was fine.  He has an old Kindle.  First gen.  No light.  But he does like the hard buttons.  It is okay.

So I am knitting while waiting for DD's Girl Scout meeting.  And then the Kobo slipped from my fingers.  You see where it is going...

Another dead one!

*sigh*

Two dead Kobos in less than two weeks.

*hangs head*

Is it fair to blame the pattern on that.  Probably not.  But it feels like this pattern is out to get me.  *laugh*

It was a Kobo Aura HD (which they no longer sell.)  I recall it was pretty pricey as e-readers go.  I think around $175 or so.

But I wanted to support a company where you can have a portion of the book sales support an Indie bookstore.  Mind you, my ebooks purchases won't make or break anyone's bottom line.  But it is nice.

I looked.  The Kobo Aura H2O which is the replacement for it is $180.  *sigh*  Too much to blow right before the holidays.  And honestly, the Glo HD is probably just as good for what I want and $50 cheaper.  I like the bigger size.  But it isn't that much bigger.  *smile*

But in the span of the two years I have had my Kobo, I have come to realize that pdfs on the Kobo suck.  They just are a pain in the tush.  I usually convert the patterns to an epub format to get them to work better.  And then break out the charts into pdfs to get them to be more easily readable.  Not fun honestly...

I needed something that wasn't going to run me as much right before Xmas.

So long story short.  I got the $50 Amazon Fire tablet.

And I also have to confess.  So far, I really like it.

After tinkering for a couple days with different ereader programs, I think I may have found a perfect solution for me with Moon+ Reader.  Hooray!

The Pro version has the ability to highlight rows.  It also has a rectangle function.  So I can draw a rectangle over the row & move it around as needed which is handy.  So hooray!

Only downside of the app is that it requires storing to the device to edit the file.  *sigh*  So I have to put my pattern on the device rather than the card.  The Fire is small.  It *claims* 8 GB.  But in says there is 5.6 GB with only 1.17 GB free.

Miss Babs Yowza - Whatta Skein! in Gal Noir Colorway
Purchased at Miss Babs Hand Dyed Yarns & Fibers

After both The Knit Girllls & Round the Twist's podcasts discussing the Weigh It Shawls, I bought WI2. Love shawls that sit well on the shoulders.

The toughest choice was which colorways to choose. And when they got here, which one to use for the shawl!

I weighed the skein after winding. People aren't kidding about these coming in heavy! This one is a whopping 9 1/8th oz!

Since I had so much more, I used more on the body of the shawl. It is more a suggestion anyhow. Got to the edging. Did increase rows. Have 64 grams to start the pattern repeat. I will weigh it again after to see how much I am using for the two rows.

After 2 rows, 50 gms. 14 gms less.

36 gms after another repeat. Got out another repeat & had enough to bind off.

Love the project. Fits wonderfully on the shoulders. Nice and squishy. Definitely a new fav shawl.

Charts

I decided to cast on the Vernal Equinox Surprise Shawl with my Tri'Coterie Sock BFL Silky yarn in the Cinna colorway.  The colorway is this beautiful gradient from royal blue to midnight blue to black.  I fell in love with it when I saw it.  And Cinna is probably my favorite Hunger Games character.

I have gotten to really like charts because they show what stitches are where.  And show  how they correspond to the previous rows.

Or at least they should.

The Vernal Equinox pattern has charts.  They look like normal charts.  But they aren't.  Starting with row 43, the pattern shifts by a stitch.  However, the chart makes no indication that they are switching.  *blink*  Ummm.  I don't understand why you would chart it that way.  You have to move any stitch markers over one stitch to the right.  And then next row the stitches won't be on top of the stitch where they are in the chart.

Huh?

I keep coming back to *why* chart it that way?  If it is for space reasons, *say so unfront*.  Luckily there are over a thousand people that have knit this.  So a quick Ravelry search told me that my suspicions about things shifting were correct.  But why not state that?

I feel like it has to be me.  Most people said how easy the charts were to follow.  I don't see that as easy.  Luckily, I found someone who marked out when the rows in the pattern shift.  So I will just highlight them on the pattern so I know.  *shrugs.*

Ah well.  Live and learn.

Lesson for Today

Lesson for today.  Do not cast on a project after you have only had five hours sleep the night before.

I got an amazing skein of DK yarn in the Reavers colorway from Fresh from the Cauldron  The terrific Lizzy4873 on Ravelry stalked for me.  I have been lusting after this colorway since the minute I saw it.  But because it is a gradient and apparently a &@)#* to dye, Jenn doesn't dye it often or that much.  The last update only had five skeins and dear Lizzy was great enough to swap with someone who got two in her cart when she only wanted one.  Otherwise I wouldn't have gotten it at all!

I didn't take a photo, but this one is pretty much identical to the one I got.    The original pic is darker.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/squibstitcher/6887443077/in/photostream/  But I do like the newer one too.

I spent a good deal of time pouring over patterns.  The strong contenders were Zilver, Escapist & the Colonnade Shawl.

But the Peek-a-Boo Shawl won out.  Part of that is about the sorta distressed, warped feeling of the pattern.  It matches well with the colorway name.

If there was more yardage, Zilver probably would have won out.  But with only 230 yards I really felt like something with more openness would be a good choice.  The Peek-a-Boo Shawl has an 8 row repeat that I can just continue til I run out of yarn.

So I was excited to get it cast on last night.  See above.  Five hours sleep the night before...

So I am merrily knitting along.  I come to row 6.  It says I will have 25 sts after I knit the row.  But I check and double check.  No, really.  I need 25 sts to knit the row & with four stitches increase, the row will actually be 29 sts in the end.  I am so clever.  I know best.  I get to the row 10 which has more pattern work.  I am over by 4 sts.  Really.  I know best.  So I fudge it and figure I will sort it out in the next row.

So this morning I am walking to the train from Eldest Munchkin's school camp.  I pull out the pattern and start looking at it.  Going through I reread row 6.  And I promptly want to whap myself upside the head.

I know I am kinda number dyslexic sometimes.  But somehow I transposed *K1, DW twice, TW twice, DW twice, K1* to *K1, DW, TW, DW, K1* x 2.  *blink* How?!  See sleep.  *shakes head*

The good news is that I was very early in the pattern so I only had to rip back a few rows.  But man... I don't feel very clever!  *laugh*

Ah well.  I am glad I sat down and read over the pattern before I got further along.  That is a plus.

I got more sleep last night.  And this shows the beauty of sleep.  It helps the body & brain function better.  Mind you, because I started knitting this I stayed up later than I should have of course!  *laugh*

I need to write more. Have to post pics of my Afternoon Tea shawl & at least a little Tour de Fleece wrap up.  But my work machine is acting up.  So whenever they can take it, I need to shut down super quick.

Two Projects Not Like Each Other...

*in the Seasame Street song tune*

One of these projects is not like the other, one of these projects does not belong...

I have two projects. One done. The other nearly done. Just needs buttons and something very weird for a nearly finished project... *sigh*

The one that is done is the one I adore. *happy dance*

Sometime around the Friday before Rhinebeck (Oct. 3rd), I thought it would be great to finish spinning the pound of fiber I got from the Decadent Fibers. They will be at Rhinebeck and I would love to show them how beautifully the colors were on the fiber they custom dyed for me!

So I really wanted to knit something to wear at Rhinebeck. Of course I hadn't finish spinning all the fiber until a day I started knitting it! (And it had to dry after soaking it.)

It is a super easy pattern so I can knit it anywhere. It is kinda ideal knitting for my vacation week. I can catch up on some movies and clearing off the dvr while working on it.

Though like every triangular shawl, as it gets wider, each repeat takes longer. I really wanted to finish it Thursday so it would have enough time to dry while blocking it. But at 1:00, I was messing up a very simple pattern. So I knew it was time for sleep.

I was able to soak it by Friday at noon. I tried to get as much water as possible out after soaking it. I had to hope it would be dry by Saturday so I could to wear it at Rhinebeck. Luckily it was!

Though on the funny side, I wasn't able to show the Decadent Fiber people. Their booth was busy the two times I went by. And they didn't have roving in colors I wanted. So I didn't make any purchase there. But I am still really happy I finished it. I really adore it.

The length is longer that I had anticipated once I blocked it. I like a lot of length so I am hopeful it will be good. It turned out to be 40”. The width is about 72”. So it is very cozy. I was warm enough all day at Rhinebeck and there was a chill to the air. Definitely a piece I love.

I love the way the fiber looks. There is some great striping of color too (which part of the reason I picked the pattern).

For the bottom edge, the pattern says to do the 5 rows of garter & bind off. I wanted something more open. I did a row of YO & K2tg, then bound off the edge. I like that it gives it a nice finished edge. I was going to do that at row 5 of the garter repeat. But I was running out of yarn so I did it at row 3 instead. I think it looks better with that edging.

Trellis Baby Sweater for Xmas Present

Needles:

Yarn:

TLC Cotton Plus Solid in 3810 light blue

~1 skeins = 178.0 yards

Purchased at Smiley's Yarns Sale in NJ

I wanted to start on some more Xmas knitting. I have completed the sweater for Trinity, Michael & Jen's daughter who is about to turn 1. I wanted to do something for their boy who was due in this fall.

I swear that Michael told me they were expecting a boy while I was visiting my family in Easter. No one told me otherwise. So I made a blue sweater. Nice cables for a boy.

Then I got the call. It is a girl. Ummm…excuse me?! *blink*

I am going to dye the sweater to purple. I am curious how it will come out. I am hoping it will look good. And hey, if not, I am not redoing it at this point. I have enough other Xmas knitting to do.

I sorta wish I had done a bigger size. Knowing Michael & jen's daughter Trinity is large, I should have anticipated a big baby. Plus it could have been worn later. But ah well. Honestly, I don't know if they even liked the sweater I knit for Trinity last Xmas. So I don't want to spend tons of time on it if it will never get worn.

I did a search on baby projects in the TLC Cotton Plus and found the Trellis sweater. It looked really attractive so I decided to try it.

I confess I am not thrilled with the way the pattern is written. I finally sat down and marked up the pattern with the row #s. I am not sure why the writer wrote it without the row #s. Other than that though, the pattern is great. And I love the way it turned out.

(Though heaven knows if I had known it was a girl I would have done something lacier. Ah well. *shakes head* I should know better than to listen to Michael!! *laugh*)

Other Projects

I actually have another project that is almost completed. I am doing a two color Xmas stocking. I started it for the October Sock Knitters Anonymous KAL on Ravelry. I need to add an i-cord loop. But otherwise that is done too.

The only big project is the black alpaca sweater. It is a nice, simple, mindless project. I think the sleeves are done. But I left them on the cable from the interchangeable Knitpick needles and just put caps on them in case I decide after the body is done that I need more (or even less) length.

I have cast on the back & need to cast on the sides. I figure if I do them all at the same time, I can tweak it as I go along. I am hoping it comes out well. *crosses fingers*

I Love It. I Love It. I Love It.

I just finished the Lala Simple Shawl in my handspun custom dyed Decadent Fibers fiber. I love it. I love it. I love it! *grin*

I will post pics on Monday when I am back at the office. I have been on vacation this week. And Rhinebeck/NY Sheep & Wool is tomorrow! *happy wiggle*

I keep walking back to the table to admire the shawl. The colors form these great stripes that are not so different as to be annoying. But very present. I will just have to share the pics soon to show you what I mean.

Scary thing is that I decided last Friday that I should finish spinning the pound of fiber I got from Decadent Fibers & create something! Decadent Fibers will be at Rhinebeck so I wanted to show them how beautiful the colors look together. The fiber was custom dyed for me. I told them I wanted black, purple and burgundy. They did a great job with the colors and they look lovely together.

I spun as much as I could of the remaining fiber while up in the Adirondacks. But I forgot an extra bobbin. So I did the rest the day after I got home (Tuesday).

While letting the single rest a bit, I cast on the shawl. I picked the Lala Simple Shawl because it was simple but would show off the colors really well. I didn't want anything too lacey as I wanted this to be a warm shawl. Also, I wanted super simple so I could do it while watching some movies & getting stuff off the dvr.

The next day I plied the singles and set them to soak. After that, I continued knitting. And knitting... *grin*

I had hoped to complete it by last night so I would be certain it would be dry from the blocking in time to wear it at Rhinebeck tomorrow. But at around 1:00 am I realized I had switched from knit to purl half way into the row. *blink* You really wouldn't think that was possible given it was all supposed to be knit. *laugh* So I knit back the 1/4 on the right side & the half row on the wrong side where I messed up. *shakes head* I decided that was definitely a sign that I was too tired to finish it. So I headed to bed.

I finished up this morning and had it soaking by noon. I used a salad spinner to try and get some moisture out. But I stopped after a few tries as it kept getting caught in the top. Then I pressed it between two towels, rolled them up and stepped on them to press out more moisture. It actually worked pretty well. I just felt it and it is almost dry in some areas. So I am really hopeful that it will be dry in time to wear in the morning. But if not, I can hang it over the back seat in the car for some additional drying time.

For the bottom edge, the pattern said to do 5 ridges garter stitch (one of the pattern repeats) and then bind off. However, I decided I wanted to do something a bit more like the top edge which has yarn overs to create the increases. So I did 2 ridges of garter, then a row of YO, K2tg. Then the next row was the bind off. So there is some open edging similar to the top. I think it looks very cool.

My plan had been to do 4 ridges of garter and then start the YO, K2tg row. But I was running out of yarn. It worked out pretty well.

Though I always forget just how much blocking can change the size! I was aiming for 25-28" long. When I finished it was about 23-24". When I started blocking it was 42"! I let up some and made it 40" long. But it is still pretty lengthy. But honestly, I think it will look great that long.

I think I need to dig into my jewelry box for a pin to hold it in place tomorrow. I am sure I have something that will work somewhere (I have a ton of costume jewelry I never wear). I wish Paul's kilt pin would work. But it would be way too heavy.

It is sooo funny. After my lace shawl, I said I doubted I would ever do another shawl. So what did I do? *chuckle* But this shawl is amazingly beautiful and I think it will actually be warm, unlike my lace one. So I hope I will get some wear out of it. Though part of me says that I could hang it on a wall and I would be happy! *grin*

I will post pics soon. (And probably actually have some taken while wearing it which is beyond weird for me. *laugh*)

This time tomorrow I will be at Rhinebeck! Woohoo!!

Azalea Malabrigo Blue Jeans Lace Leaf Shawl Completed

Pattern:

Blue Jeans Lace Leaf Shawl by spinndiva

Yarn:

Malabrigo Yarn Lace in Azalea Colorway

Purchased on sale from Pick Up Sticks

http://pickupsticks.ca/

Nearly all of 2 skeins = approximately 900 yards

Needles:

US 5 / 3.75 mm Knitpicks Harmony

My first lace project that isn't on socks. *gulp*

I had to rip out the beginning at least 4-5 times to get it right. Also, I started off with the Knitpick Options size 6 needle. It was way too slippery. I switched to a size 5 Harmony as I don't have a size 6. It definitely worked better. Also, the Harmony needles have an even sharper tip which worked well for the k3tog stitches that occur in every lace repeat.

The repeat isn't too bad. It got easier with time and I could see it if I made a mistake. (Though there were a couple early on that I didn't spot but given the yarn color, they are pretty hard to pick out.)

It is taking some getting used to lace yarn. It is much thinner than anything I had used.

I couldn't do this as tv knitting when I started. There is just too much going on with it to keep track. But I did find that I was able to knit without looking at it as much with some practice. So I could do some of it in front of the tv.

I had to look with the k3 together decreases that are in all the right side rows. Otherwise I would miss a stitch and drop it which would be bad. So it wasn't mindless enough TV knitting, so I did miss things from time to time. Luckily, my hubby Paul is patient with me and rewinds when it is important or tells me if I missed something. *grin*

I think the Malabrigo Azalea colorway is probably be a bit busy for the pattern. However, I like the pattern & enjoyed the way it come out. I think the yarn might have been better served with a very simple pattern. But I would have gone batty doing tons of stockinette with lace weight! So the pattern is keeping me interested without being so busy that it is totally lost.

I was originally thinking that 30 repeats would give me enough length. However, I found 35 gave me the length I wanted. I wanted it to come down to my tush. I kept saying I would just keep doing the repeats until it is long enough. But I decided to go with 35 which was good as I kept wanted to opt out of more repeats the wider it got.

I confess that I got pretty bored with the repeats about half way through the project. I just started saying I had to do X number of rows before I could do my other knitting for the day. The good news is that it is done!

I honestly don't know if I will do lace weight again any time soon. I think I would need to be a much faster knitter to enjoy doing a lot of it. But I may try more again at a later date.

I will probably see in anyone wants the remaining skein on Ravelry. I don't think I would want to do something in this colorway again any time soon. So I would rather it go to someone who would enjoy it. I don't honestly think I will be buying any more lace weight yarn in the near future.

After blocking it is longer than it was. It is around 40" long which seems ideal. I should take some more pics with it wrapped around me to show the length.

Though I think I might have pulled a bit too much when I blocked it. The repeats are a bit elongated. But I like it.

Though I have learned that blocking lace and getting a straight edge is not easy. The top isn't a straight line. I blocked it and then repinned the edges when it had dried a little. I put the pins further into the edge and smoothed out the edges. I can see why people love blocking wires if they are doing a lot of lace knitting.

Though the Yarn Harlot says she runs thread through the edge and uses that. That seems like a great way to go as well. Just not sure how exactly that works. But might be worth trying if I do it again.

Rethink on Blue Jeans Lace Leaf Shawl

I completed 15 repeats. I was thinking I was going to go with 30 repeats. However, holding it to my back, it isn't going to be long enough.

I was figuring it would be 25", which is 30 repeats. 15 repeats is measuring 12 1/2", so I was right with the count. However, it doesn't feel long enough. So now I am figuring on 35 repeats. It will just make it about 2" longer, but I suspect that is better overall.

Then again, I might get further along in this and decide I am done. *laugh* But we will see.

So that means I am only 15% done. Whee.

I am glad I will have this with me for the plane to and from Arizona. It will give me a good chunk of knitting time. Though the flight home is a red eye so I suspect I will be sleeping, not knitting. But I am hoping that I can still get some done in the evenings.

I still need a super simple project for knitting during the meetings. I had the bulky baby kimono last conference and that worked out really well. I just can't seem to find a simple pattern that is all one piece. Most seem to be pieces that will need to be sewn together. And I confess. I am lazy! I hate piecing after the fact.

Hmmm. I could do another Tomten with the Lion Brand Suede I have. It would look very different than the one I did for littlest George. I could do that for my grand niece Trinity for Xmas. Getting an early start wouldn't be bad. And I can always oversize it a bit so I know it will fit her. Hmmm. Thinking this is a very good idea.

I might send Paul to the library for another EZ book. I have been tempted to try the baby surprise sweater. So that is another thought.

Azalea Malabrigo Blue Jeans Lace Leaf Shawl - 10% Done

I figure I would like the shawl to be coming to touch my tush. This is about 25" on me. So I measured the repeats to see. And I think I need to do 30 repeats to get the length I want. Mind you, I might tweak that along the way in either direction, but that is my thought currently.

Have 3 skeins but I don't think it will take more than 1- 1 1/2 skeins.

I still feel the pattern is probably more busy than it should be for the yarn. But I also decided, I don't care. I like it. And that pattern is interesting enough that I am enjoying it. It looks good. And if I had to do this much stockinette in lace weight for a shawl, I would go batty! *laugh* So I will continue with it.

I like that it is only an eight row repeat. I definitely find the more I do it, the more I get used to it. So I am getting a bit faster with my knitting, though not as much as I would hope really. Because the yarn is very thin and there numerous k3 togethers, I have to look at the project. So really not ideal tv knitting. It hasn't stopped me sometimes, but only with shows where I know if I am not looking it won't be too bad. *grin*

Because I am a geek, I decided to figure out how long I had to knit before I was X% done. Because each repeat is getting more stitches, it was interesting to calculate it. Silly, I know. But I like having an idea of how far in I am. The funniest part is that if this is indeed 30 repeats, I am 10% done, despite having 11 repeats completed. *laugh* For the next 5-6 repeats, there is 5% more every other row or so, then it 5% for every repeat to the end.

I need to get something else on my needles. I am just debating what. I have the Scout's Swag Soctober colorway that is still begging for a pattern. I am holding off in hopes it will work for the April Sock Knitters Anonymous KAL. If I have some time today, I will take a look at the patterns available for the KAL.

I also need something super simple for my work conference. Last time I was working on a baby kimono for my niece. It was mostly stockinette with very basic shaping. So I could knit it without looking which is critical with conference. I have to be able to drop it any time to make notes. I suspect I can find something in that ilk that will work. Could always start prepping for next Xmas, right? *chuckle*

The plus side is that I have 5-6 hours of knitting on a plane on the trip out to AZ. So I am guessing I will get a nice chunk of the lace shawl done then. Woohoo.

Time to get some work done. This week has been kinda crazed. I am glad that I had Pandora radio on to keep me happy while working.

Shawl Thoughts

Note on Thursday, 20th - I went with the Blue Jeans one...

I am debating casting on a shawl. I have the yarn. It is Malabrigo Yarn Lace.

The yarn is very different in colors, red, black & purple. So I fear anything with too much pattern will get lost. But I want to try something interesting.

I haven't taken pics, but there are a couple similar ones on Flickr:

http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=all&q=Azalea+malabrigo&m=text

I have 3 skeins, which is around 1410.0 yards according to Ravelry.

Of course, the pattern I think would work with the yarn in the Folk Shawl book is a very different weight (DK vs. Lace). So I don't think I will do that. Given this is my first large lace project, I should stick with something where I am not tweaking it given I am not sure of how it works.

I have sorta narrowed it down:

Ravelry has some of these in more complex yarns and they still seem to hold up okay. So at the moment I am leaning towards this one. But I am not sure.

Think this might be the best match to the yarn. But I also fear as a lot of it is stockinette that I will get really bored. I also confess. The thought of purling back every row is not so appealing.

Like this one a lot, but not sure it will look good with the yarn.

I think this might wait for a simpler yarn. Though it might look pretty with the yarn I have.

I admit I am most tempted by something that starts at the tip and works up. That way if for some reason I really don't care for lace knitting, I can stop when I feel it is done. Also, that way I know I have enough yarn. And it I have more, I could make it longer.

I am certainly open to suggestions!
